Double Jeopardy By Tiffany Dickinson edtiff@centuryinter.net 5 years ago "Do you have the tissue samples?" asked the dark man with the cigarette. He had been waiting a long time for this moment, and he wasn't about to let some two-bit scientist ruin it. "Yes, sir, I do. He had to come in for his regular physical and we took it then. We're sure he doesn't suspect a thing." "He had better not. For your sake. When can we start project Duplicity? Soon, I hope." "We can start immediately if that's what you like." Ever since he had started this project Simmons hadn't liked this man. He was too pushy and he had no idea what kind of work and biological breakthroughs it took to pull this off. He hoped those cigarettes gave him lung cancer, and he also hoped the second hand smoke didn't give him lung cancer. "Very good. Please, proceed. Present day Scully sat hat her computer writing the report for her last assignment. It had been a rather clear cut problem for once. Some children had been kidnapped from a local playground, but they had found them all safe and sound. Of coarse Mulder had chalked it all up to aliens, even after they had apprehended the kidnapper. Shortly after they got back to Washington Mulder had left to visit some friends in New York. He had told her he'd be back in about 2 week. The was still a week to go before he was due home. It was nice to have some peace for a change, but she still missed him. After all, he was the only one she trusted enough to really talk to. She turned and stared out the window. The knock on the door startled her. She snapped out of her dream state and rushed to get the door. She was even more startled when she saw Mulder standing on her door step. "Mulder! I didn't think you were going to be home so soon." she gasp. It wasn't like him to just show up unannounced, and furthermore, something just didn't feel right..... "Well, there was some bad weather in New York and if I didn't get out soon I wasn't going to get out at all. You know I couldn't stay away from you that long." He shot her a sideways smile. It wasn't one of those typical Mulder smiles she was used to. In fact, it scared her. Still, she couldn't fight a nagging feeling that something was wrong. Mulder pushed his way in the door and into her living room. He looked around the apartment like he was scrutinizing it. Almost like he'd never seen it before. "You know, I like what you've done with your apartment. It's you." "It hasn't changed sense the last time you were here. Why are you just saying that now?" "I guess I've just noticed." He walked down the hallway towards the bedroom. "I'll have to check the rest of the place out and see what I've missed." He called back over his shoulder. The phone rang but Scully didn't answer it. She still had that gut feeling and wasn't about to let him go exploring on his own. She kept telling herself but she couldn't ignore her woman's intuition. She went to the bed room but didn't seen him. Just then he jumped out form behind the door and grabbed her, smothering her screams. "Trust no one, Scully," he whispered in her ear. "Cancer man sends his regards." She felt the gun in her back. She struggled but it was all in vain. He had her in a death grip. Then she heard the shot, and she waited for the pain and eventually the blackness. Instead Mulder loosened his grip and fell to the floor. She spun around to see the real Mulder in the doorway. He ran to her and held her tightly. She stared crying. "I had to come back to Washington early. I called from my car but there was no answer. When I saw a light in the window I thought I'd come up anyway. Looks like I made it just in time." "What was it Mulder?" she sobbed. "I wish I knew." She leaned into Mulder's chest, and this time she was sure he was real. ---- Tiffany aka Tiffi aka X-phile aka Miss X Winner of the "Spends WAAAYYYY to much time on the web" award 6/96 Keeper of the Scales (Tiffi's scales of 1 to 10) Keeper of X-Files Sillyness Room #42b XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXX XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX X MARKS THE SPOT!
